I just got back from OddCon, where in a discussion of realistic and coherent magic systems, Butcher's name immediately came up as a laudatory example.

I presume they were talking about his epic fantasy series, and not the Dresden books. The magic in the Dresden series seems sort of hazy and 'as needed'. The Calderon books on the other hand have a very nicely realized magic system. Also, I was surprised at how very similar his system is to that in Avatar: the Last Airbender, though I have no idea who came first.
